Barnard Elementary School is slated to get a new wing to replace the current portables used for the first and second grade annex. DCPS is working with the school to form a "Facilities Improvement Team" (FIT) composed of administrators, teachers, parents, and community members. The PTA will update this page periodically with new information regarding plans, schedules, and opportunities for community involvement in the construction process.

ALERT: Changes to Access to the School During Construction
Dear Barnard Families:
We’re excited to share some great news about a big improvement coming to our school! Starting on Monday, April 20, 2025, construction will begin to replace the trailers with a brand-new, permanent structure. This new addition will provide our students with a more comfortable and inspiring learning environment. We expect the project to be completed by the summer of 2026, and students will begin using the new classrooms at the start of School Year 2027.
Important Changes Starting Monday, April 20, 2025:
- New Entry Point: Students will enter the school from Crittenden Street.
- Arrival Support: Crossing guards, staff, and parent volunteers will be there to help guide students safely into the building.
- Bus Drop-Off: School buses will drop students off at the corner of 4th and Crittenden Street. Teacher assistants will escort them inside.
- Dismissal:
- 3:15 pm Dismissal locations: ECE (Pre-K3 and Pre-K4), Kindergarten and 1st grade will remain the same. Families will have to enter the playground through the STEPS on CRITTENDEN STREET to pick up students from their usual dismissal location
- 4:15 pm Dismissal locations:
- 2nd, 3rd and 5th Grade: Families use the CRITTENDEN STREET STEPS to pick up from the playground area/cafeteria
- 4th Grade: Families pick up from the 4th STREET side entrance
- Afterschool (3:30-6 pm, all remaining students): All after school pickup/dismissal will be at the 4th street side door entrance starting at 3:30 pm. However ECE (PK3 & PK4) families MAY (optionally) go up the Crittenden Street steps, through the playground, and pickup their children from the classroom side doors.

Barnard has a four star STAR rating and recently won the Bold improvement award. Our School motto is "Only The Best Is Good Enough." Our strong community involvement and dedicated staff are reasons that Barnard has been recognized twice with the Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM) Award. High expectations for all students resulting in academic excellence are central to Barnard's philosophy. We have strong programs that appeal to our students, like our Early Financial Literacy program that teaches age-appropriate financial skills. Barnard also hosts the Flagship Autism Program for DCPS, and students from all over the city are enrolled in this program.
One of our parents summarized it best -- Barnard accepts all children where they are and takes them to unbelievable levels!

ECE students stay in their classrooms or an adjoining one, and K-5 meet in various locations around the school. Spots are limited and have filled up in recent years, so enroll early (enrollment begins in the spring of the prior school year).
Learn more at https://dcps.dc.gov/afterschool. Your student must be enrolled at Barnard to participate in aftercare. Go to dcps.dc.gov/asp to complete aftercare signup.

3rd graders swim at the pool at Roosevelt High School.
Uniforms
Barnard Bears at all grades wear uniforms in the colors white and navy blue. There are no basic style restrictions - shorts, jumpers, skirts, dresses or pants can all be worn as long as they are in those colors.
Uniforms can be purchased new from any children’s clothing retailer; or at local thrift stores; and are often exchanged in neighborhood listservs or Facebook groups. When possible, the PTA organizes uniform swaps and donations of clothes in good condition.
Contact the PTA Board for assistance in getting uniforms for your children, we are happy to help connect you to resources!

Mr. Lehman directs the Barnard choir in the music room.
Breakfast & Lunch Menus
Barnard provides free lunch to all students, as well as breakfast to those who arrive between 8:10-8:30 am. ECE students eat in their classrooms, while K-5 eat in the cafeteria.

School Supplies
The official school supplies list is here: Barnard SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST 2023-2024.pdf. Note: This list is comprehensive of what students and teachers might need all year, but in our (PTA Board’s) experience very few classrooms need their students to arrive with all these materials on day 1. We recommend waiting to see if your classroom teacher sends a more targeted list of school supplies or specific requests before purchasing anything.

Required Immunizations/Vaccines
Healthy bodies and minds are the foundation of academic success! Immunizations and regular visits to the doctor help protect students' health and readiness to learn. All students must be up to date on their routine pediatric immunizations. The best place for a family to access immunizationsis their primary medical provider as part of a comprehensive well-child visit where the Universal Health Certificate is completed.
Together we can ensure students are healthy and ready to learn by protecting them and our community against infectious disease and completing routine dental and well-child visits. Secure all necessary immunizations and submit the Universal Health Certificate and Oral Health Assessment to school before the first day! To learn more about health forms and immunizations required for school, please visit the OSSE website and for more information on vaccine services and access, please visit the DC Health website.
